Scientist and Mahatma
Hari Prasad Shastri
A biography and some key writings of the great modern Yogi Swami Rama Tirtha.
This popular biography of one of the greatest spiritual lights of modern times, Swami Rama Tirtha, has now been significantly expanded to include several of the Mahatma’s brilliant and dynamic lectures, as well as other inspirational writings. The author, Hari Prasad Shastri, knew and revered Swami Rama Tirtha, and his moving account of his life uniquely conveys the atmosphere of the holy sage.

Dr Shastri’s original text has been enhanced by nearly 200 pages of the Swami’s teachings. While in America between 1902 and 1904, Rama Tirtha lectured widely. Every lecture is lit by a sympathetic and good-humoured understanding of his Western audience, and illustrated with memorable stories.

At the same time, writes Hari Prasad Shatri: 'His are the holiest and highest utterances ever delivered in America on the subject of Advaita (non-duality). Like the holy Ganges dashing forth from the glacier, most wonderful truth flowed from his lips and the world will one day recognise that the simple, ecstatic and yet profound utterances of Rama were a supreme expression of the spiritual truth'.

'The best form of religion is to do away with egoism and to merge in the universal Self to such an extent as to be oblivious of the little self. Not only one particular country but the whole world, nay, the whole universe, shall be benefited through absorption in the real Self. Springs of peace, power, bliss and cheerfulness shall burst forth and the pleasant aura of felicity and energy shall radiate from a religious man.'

'You will have a vision of God in your soul when you forget and forgive all your opponents, backbiters and contradictors as swiftly as the holy Ganges sweeps away the straws thrown into its waters, or the rays of the sun dissipate darkness....As long as you do not become a king, you cannot sit by the King. Rub out all desire and ambition. Sit firmly on the throne of renunciation; put on the crown of divine knowledge; decorate your neck with the pearls of detachment. In such a state, I assure you, God will not leave you for a minute.'
